An Australian legend is that British police sent William Buckley to Australia as a convict in the early 1800s. He escaped and lived in the Australian bush with the Aboriginal people for 32 years.

In 1835, he left the bush and told the police his story. After the Australian people heard it, they invented new words to include in their language. They believed it would be  very difficult to survive in the Australian bush.

‘Buckley’s’, ‘Buckley’s chance’ and Buckley’s and none’, are examples of Australian slang that mean ‘next to no chance’.
